In The Settlers of Catan, players race to acquire resources, build roads and develop cities in order colonize the island of catan. The game board is variable, constructed from 19 resource tiles at the beginning of every game, making every game unique. And while the game does take a while to learn for the first time, it is simple enough for the entire family to understand.
Games can take up to 90 minutes to complete, but the time goes by quickly. Unlike many strategy games like Monopoly and Risk, Settlers of Catan is not a zero-sum game. While there is a definite winner, the game doesn’t end with the other players feeling beaten into submission. Instead, it’s a race to victory, with teams trying to build the longest roads and largest colonies the fastest.
The game has become extremely popular worldwide, leading to the creation of several expansion sets to give the game even more variety. It requires a minimum of three players to play.
